Plastering a Huge Ceiling: Epic Transformation You Can’t Miss!

Welcome to another episode of Daniel Lee Plastering and Rendering! Today, we take on the challenge of plastering a massive ceiling, and it’s nothing short of an epic transformation. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to achieve a perfectly smooth ceiling finish on a large and uneven surface, you’re in the right place. The Ceiling in Question

This project involved an old renovation where the ceiling joists were far from perfect—lumpy, bumpy, and uneven. These imperfections presented a unique challenge for us, requiring a systematic approach to ensure a flawless finish. At over 35 square meters, this ceiling was a significant undertaking. Here’s how we tackled it step by step.

Preparation is Key

1. Tools of the Trade

Before getting started, we made sure to have all the essentials:

• Plastering stilts: To reach those tricky high spots effortlessly.
• Hop-ups: Trusty platforms for added stability.
• Fiber scrim tape: Used for covering all joints and screw heads.
• Speed skim tool: For quick and even application.
• And, of course, coffee to keep us fueled throughout the day!

2. Scrimming the Ceiling

The first step was to fully scrim the ceiling. This involved applying fiber scrim tape over every joint to prevent cracking and ensure a durable finish. Given the uneven nature of the ceiling joists, we also scrimmed over all screw heads for added reinforcement. This meticulous preparation laid the foundation for a smooth application of plaster.

Plastering Process

1. Mixing the Plaster

We used five bags of multi-finish plaster for this ceiling—a testament to how uneven the surface was. This amount might sound excessive, but it was necessary to build up layers and achieve a level surface.

2. Applying the First Coat

The first coat of plaster was applied evenly across the entire ceiling. Using our speed skim tool, we flattened the plaster, ensuring there were no major bumps or hollows. In areas with more significant dips, we added extra plaster, or “dubbed out,” to maintain an even surface.

3. Tackling a Five-Bag Set

A five-bag set isn’t something we do every day, and it reminded us of the sheer physical effort involved in plastering. Thankfully, with two of us on the job—myself and my trusted colleague, Chris—we were able to manage it efficiently.

Polishing the Finish

1. The Second Coat

After the first coat was flattened and allowed to set slightly, we moved on to the second coat. This layer is crucial for achieving that smooth, polished finish. It’s applied thinner than the first coat but with equal precision.

2. Wet Troweling

Once the second coat had firmed up, we used the wet troweling technique to refine the surface further. This process involves lightly misting the plaster with water and smoothing it out using a trowel. The result? A seamless, polished ceiling that looks as good as new!

Lessons Learned from This Project

Plastering a ceiling of this size and condition is no small feat, especially when it’s a five-bag set. Having a second pair of hands (shoutout to Chris!) made the job manageable and far less daunting.

2. The Right Tools Matter

Using professional tools like plastering stilts and a speed skim tool significantly sped up the process and ensured a high-quality finish.
